On a fine British summer's evening in July the Berkshire Renegades American Football team wasn't content with just playing football. As competitive athletes that they are, they challenged local cricket team, Lower Early Cricket Club (www.lowerearleycc.org.uk), to a Twenty20 game.

Lower Early opted to bat first but soon found themselves one down when Defensive Tackle Sam Thornton took a running catch off the bowling of Defensive End Jamie Foster. Lower Early consolidated however, stealing quick singles and taking advantage of gaps in the Renegades field for boundaries.
A few missed catches in the Renegades field prompted confidence in the Lower Early side before Linebacker Stephen Portwine claimed the prized wicket of Oli Neal with a delightful yorker.
Tight bowling at the death from Offensive Lineman Karun Malhotra and Kicker James Treherne restricted Lower Early to a competitive total of 167 for 2 after 20 overs.
The Renegades opened their innings with Portwine and Malhotra, however their inexperience showed with a stumping on the second ball as Malhotra looked to use his feet agaist the spinners. Although wickets were falling at regular intervals, the visiting side showed poise and some hidden talent at the crease in Portwine and Foster (Leading with 19 runs). Any realistic chance of winning the game disappeaed when cricket veteran Thornton fell to a good catch for a rapid-fire 15; the Renegades eventually posting a respectable total of 91 all out after 14 overs.
After the match Renegades captain Sam Thornton commented "I'm pleased with the way the boys played today. For most of them this was their first game since school days, and for a couple their first game ever! But I can see some natural talent here, if we get back in the nets and work on a few fundamentals we will be winning games in no time."
Three touchdown passes from quarterback Andy Hollands, in his first BAFL start, helped the visiting Berkshire Renegades defeat the Plymouth Admirals 30-14 on Sunday.
